About Penguins
The Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony is Oamaru's largest tourist attraction, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to observe little penguins in their natural habitat. Owned by the Waitaki District Council, the colony is home to over 130 breeding pairs and welcomes over 75,000 visitors every year. In the evening, visitors are captivated by the enchanting sight of penguins returning from their day's fishing at sea.
The colony not only focuses on tourism but also prioritizes research and conservation efforts. They have a dedicated Research Scientist who is one of New Zealand's leading experts on little penguins. Their long-term conservation program ensures the protection and stability of the penguin population, both at the colony and in other areas within the region.
