Pens of the Earth is a literary project that uses positive environmental stories and poetry to encourage people to connect with nature and consider how to care for the places around them. Its work includes writing about themes such as wildlife, greener cities, community spaces, trees, plastic reduction and people-friendly streets, with a particular focus on Portsmouth and the Solent.
The project’s book, Wild Seas, Wilder Cities, brings together environmental writing and a range of contributors’ voices. It is also available as an audiobook, featuring recordings by 50 people. Book and audiobook sales, events and workshops help raise funds for the Solent Seagrass Restoration Project.
Pens of the Earth offers writing opportunities, including online poetry workshops led by its writer in residence, Tamsin Hopkins, as well as readings, showcases and other literary events. These activities invite participants to explore their own creativity while engaging with environmental topics. The website also provides articles, poems, a gallery, project information and mailing-list updates for readers and aspiring writers.
