Performance Space New York, formerly known as Performance Space 122, has been at the forefront of cultural, theoretical, and political discourse for over four decades. Established in 1980, it provided a sanctuary for marginalized voices that were excluded by a repressive mainstream culture and conservative government, particularly during the emergence of the devastating AIDS epidemic. Today, Performance Space continues to be a pillar of contemporary performance, showcasing interdisciplinary works that transcend boundaries between performance art, dance, theater, music, visual art, poetry, ritual, nightlife, food, film, and technology.
The organization is dedicated to centering historically excluded communities and artists. Its upcoming Healing Series explores the political power of self-healing and the role of performance in that process. Additionally, Performance Space offers a diverse range of programs, including the John Giorno Octopus Series, First Mondays Readings, and the We the Youth - Keith Haring Lecture Series.
As a community-oriented space, it also provides an Open Room for individuals to meet, rest, and work
