Periferias is the Festival of International Cinema of Marvão and Valencia de Alcántara, a cross-border cultural initiative bringing film to rural communities along the Portuguese-Spanish frontier. Produced collectively, the festival stages outdoor screenings in villages and historic locations, including castles, Roman ruins, medieval bridges and former railway stations. Its programme focuses on human rights, the environment, culture and the arts, with particular attention to peripheral, inland and rural areas where cinemas are often unavailable.

The festival presents auteur films and documentaries, alongside a varied programme of screenings in multiple Portuguese and Spanish localities. Its listings include feature films, short works and family-oriented sessions, hosted at cultural venues as well as outdoor sites. Periferias also offers educational activities through its Serviço Educativo, and its wider programme can include music and other cultural events. By connecting communities across the border and taking cinema beyond conventional venues, Periferias supports cultural access and helps bring a diverse, high-quality artistic programme to the region.
