Period Law is a legal advocacy organization working to advance period equity and end the discriminatory sales tax on menstrual products. The organization describes itself as the period equity movement’s lawyers, focused on policies that make menstrual products tax-free, toxin-free, environmentally sustainable, and freely available to everyone who needs them. It collaborates with volunteer attorneys across the country, providing legal research and support to state-based advocates and national period equity organizations.
Period Law pursues change through policy advocacy and, when necessary, litigation. Its class action lawsuits in New York, brought with Emery Celli, and Michigan, brought with WilmerHale and Schiff Hardin, helped prompt swift legislative repeal of tampon taxes in those states. The organization reports that its work has contributed to ending sales taxes on medically necessary products in 23 states, generating more than $141 million in annual savings. Period Law continues to advocate for reform in the remaining states, which it estimates represent approximately $130 million in potential savings.
