Personal Telco Project is a Portland, Oregon-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that promotes community participation in communications networks. Founded in 2000, the organization builds and shares Wi-Fi networks, giving people a role in how local connectivity is provided. It began by turning members’ homes and apartments into wireless hotspots, called nodes, and later expanded to public places such as parks and coffee shops. The project reports about 100 active nodes and aims to encourage participation on every block across the city.
Personal Telco operates open-access networks that are free for end users, made possible by hosts who share their internet connections. Its work also includes helping communities learn how to create and support their own networks. Individuals, businesses, housing projects, neighborhood groups, and other organizations can explore hosting a network, while volunteers can contribute time, money, or bandwidth. The project welcomes people with a range of technical abilities and offers ways to get involved through its mailing list, live chat, and meetings.
