Pescarello Scherzarello is the official carnival mask of Polignano a Mare, Puglia, created by the Comitato Befana Marinara / Pescarello Scherzarello OdV ETS. Introduced in a story published in 2006, this cheerful young fisherman embodies a child’s love of the sea. In its imaginative tale, Pescarello is the son of the Befana Marinara and Santa Claus, and brother to Primaverina and Pasquina.
With a bamboo fishing rod, the character symbolically “fishes” joy, fun, love, solidarity and ideas, while encouraging respect for nature and pride in local identity. Often described as an ambassador of children’s solidarity, Pescarello represents Polignano, Puglia and Italian traditions at public events and carnival celebrations. The committee shares the character’s history, stories, photographs, videos and participation in parades and gatherings across Italy and abroad.
It also promotes the Befana Marinara events and invites people interested in masks, imagination and community activities to get in touch. Pescarello is a founding councillor and Puglia representative in the National Coordination Centre of Italian Masks
