Petra Rautiainen is a Finnish novelist whose writing explores history, identity, and the ways past representations continue to shape society. Born in 1988, she holds a master’s degree in History and Cultural Studies and is pursuing doctoral research on portrayals of the Sámi in Finnish media. Her background also includes journalism, creative writing, and experience living and working in several countries.
Rautiainen’s debut novel, Land of Snow and Ashes, was published in August 2020. Set in Lapland during and after the Second World War, it contrasts the region’s Arctic landscape with the treatment of Sámi people at a secret Nazi prison camp. The novel attracted international interest, with translation rights sold to publishers in ten languages. Her second novel is in progress, and several publishing agreements also cover that work.
