About Pfälzerwald
The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Palatinate Forest-North Vosges is a cross-border conservation and sustainable development initiative in southwestern Germany and neighboring France. The Palatinate Forest, Germany’s largest continuous forest area, is known for its diverse woodlands, sunny meadow valleys, striking sandstone formations and historic castle ruins. Recognized by UNESCO in 1992, it joined with France’s North Vosges Regional Nature Park in 1998 to form Germany’s only transboundary biosphere reserve.
The reserve works with local partners to protect biodiversity and promote a sustainable relationship between people and nature. Its initiatives include habitat conservation, meadow management, grazing projects, species-rich gardens, orchards and support for the regional Glan cattle breed. Visitors can explore through guided walks, themed tours, cross-border markets and culinary events featuring local products. The reserve also provides environmental education through its Biosphere Academy, schools, guides, Junior Ranger camps and activities for children and families. Research, monitoring, publications and community projects further support its conservation and learning goals.
