About Philippe's
Philippe’s, located in downtown Los Angeles, is a historic and iconic brand known for its original French Dipped Sandwich. Established in 1908 by Philippe Mathieu, the brand has become one of the oldest and most well-known restaurants in Southern California. The story goes that in 1918, Mathieu accidentally dropped a sliced French roll into a roasting pan filled with hot juices, but a policeman still decided to try the sandwich.
The next day, he returned with friends, sparking the creation of the famous French Dipped Sandwich. Today, Philippe’s offers a variety of options, including roast beef, roast pork, leg of lamb, turkey, or ham served on a freshly baked French roll dipped in natural gravy. Customers can also add Swiss, Cheddar, American, Monterey Jack, or Blue cheese.
