Sheffield Libraries

Picture Sheffield is a non-profit cultural service supported by Sheffield City Council, dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich visual heritage of Sheffield and its surroundings. With an extensive collection of over 100,000 images, Picture Sheffield serves as a significant resource for historians, researchers, and the general public, featuring photographs and documents from the Sheffield City Council’s Archive and Local Studies Library. The organization is committed to continually expanding its collection, adding more than 5,000 new images each year through ongoing digitization efforts.

Picture Sheffield relies on the generosity of individuals who donate photographs, time, and financial support to enhance its offerings. Sales and licensing income play a crucial role in sustaining the service, ensuring that it remains freely accessible to all. While the images serve as factual records of history, it is important to note that Sheffield City Council does not endorse the sentiments expressed within them.

Picture Sheffield stands as a vital hub for cultural engagement and educational exploration in the region
