SELECTION PROJECT is an original Japanese idol-entertainment project presented by KADOKAWA and animation studio Doga Kobo. Centered on a nationwide audition reality show, it follows aspiring idols competing for the chance to make their debut. Contestants first advance through regional selections across nine areas of Japan, then face the final audition, with viewers’ votes determining the outcome. The project combines documentary-style footage and live streams with a coming-of-age story about ambition, hard work, friendship, and rivalry.
Its story follows Suzune Miyama, a girl inspired by legendary idol Akari Amazawa, whose songs brought her comfort while she was growing up. Determined to become an idol who can encourage and bring happiness to others, Suzune enters the seventh SELECTION PROJECT audition. The project launched as a television anime in 2021 and supports its storytelling through character profiles, episodes, videos, news, events, and social media content. Its associated offerings also include music, goods, and Blu-ray and DVD releases, bringing the characters and their audition journey to fans across multiple formats.
