PLAPER's Near-infrared-powered Smart Plastic Sorter (NIR-SPS) is an innovative solution that addresses the issue of inefficient and inaccurate sorting of plastic recyclables. Our systems utilize Near-Infrared (NIR) technology to analyze the spectral fingerprint of the recyclables, followed by Machine learning-classification to identify 7 types of plastics. This approach outcompetes conventional RVMs that rely solely on barcode-scanning for recognizing exclusively PET beverage bottles. Not all plastic items are presented with barcodes, nor are they made of PET plastic, which makes our solution more versatile and effective.

About PLAPER
Plaper HK is a startup that brings innovation to the recycling industry by developing the Next-Generation Reverse Vending Machine (RVM). With the aim of aiding class-based plastic pre-sorting, our RVM allows users to conveniently insert their consumed plastic products, regardless of the class. Unlike conventional RVMs that rely solely on barcode scanning, our technology utilizes near-infrared (NIR) technology for universal recognition of plastic classes. By revealing a unique NIR spectral fingerprint of the plastic sample under a tungsten light source, we are able to accurately classify plastic bottles.
Our mission is to establish an automated recycling system for waste management, eliminating the tedium and labor intensiveness, and ultimately improving the recycling rate effectively. We are dedicated to saving valuable recyclables from being disposed of in landfills and to co-creating sustainable values through public engagement.
