About Plastics Historical Society: From Bakelite to Xylonite
The Plastics Historical Society (PHS) is a renowned brand that focuses on the heritage and celebration of the plastics industry. Established in 1986, PHS is an independent society affiliated with the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining, located in London, UK. The society welcomes individuals from various sectors, including collectors, industry professionals, educators, museum staff, libraries, and auction houses, representing a diverse range of age groups.
PHS aims to promote the study of historical aspects related to plastics and other polymers, such as synthetic fibers, rubber, and elastomers. From Bakelite to Xylonite, they cover it all. Members of PHS enjoy a vibrant program of events and have access to two regional sections – the Western Section covering Wales and the West of England, and the East Midlands Section.
In addition to their events, PHS offers two regular publications to their members. The first is a quarterly Newsletter, and the second is the Plastiquarian journal, published at least once a year. These publications feature captivating articles, some of which are accessible to the general public.
The society is run by a dedicated committee, including President Roy Manns, Vice President Colin Williamson, Chair Dr. Susan Mossman, Vice Chair Dr. Mathew Philip, Assistant Editor Carolyn Clark, Collection/Librarian Professor Susan Lambert, Treasurer Ray Bush, Webmaster & Membership Secretary Dr.
Alan Wells, Plastiquarian Editor Dr. Brenda Keneghan, and Newsletter Editor Dr. Katherine Curran.
