About Plattmakers
Plattmakers is a unique and comprehensive wordbook dedicated to the Low German language, also known as Plattdeutsch, which is spoken in northern Germany and the northeastern Netherlands. Established by Marcus Buck in 2007 and launched online in 2009, Plattmakers aims to revitalize this rich linguistic heritage, which has been increasingly overshadowed by High German and Dutch.
The wordbook features a collection of words from various Plattdeutsch dialects, offering clear definitions and easy-to-navigate entries. Each entry includes a Low German definition and regional notes, highlighting where specific words are used within the dialect. In addition, Plattmakers provides translations for these words in German, Dutch, and English, making it an invaluable resource for learners and enthusiasts alike.
Since 2022, Plattmakers has also included a literary section, Plattmakers Black, further promoting the literary culture surrounding the Plattdeutsch language. The platform actively supports linguistic research and aims to connect Plattdeutsch speakers, enhancing their experience of this distinctive linguistic tradition.
