Pleinfelder Hummel e.V. is a traditional mask and customs association based in Pleinfeld, Germany. Its local tradition dates back to the 18th century, when masked Hummels used whips to drive a straw bear beyond the village boundaries as part of a winter-ending ritual. In the 20th century, this custom evolved into a carnival tradition, and members now bring the characters to life during the Fasching season.
The association features two figures, the Hummel and the Hörnerbock, each wearing a carved wooden mask and a sackcloth costume decorated with bells and fabric patches. Members make the masks in carving courses. The Hummel has a black face with red or yellow eyebrows and moustache, while the flesh-colored Hörnerbock has a black full beard and two horns. Both have fierce expressions and carry whips.
Pleinfelder Hummel e.V. participates in and organizes cultural gatherings and events, including Hummelremmidemmi, outings, a summer festival and a Hummel party. Its website also shares the club’s history, photographs, event dates and membership information.
