During the last Ice Age, high productive grazing ecosystems called the Mammoth steppe spanned across continents, sustaining millions of mammoths, bison, horses, reindeer, wolves, and tigers. However, with the expansion of humans, these ecosystems were disrupted, leading to the disappearance of millions of square kilometers of high-productive grasslands.

The vision of Pleistocene Park is to reintroduce herbivores to the Arctic and maintain their existence, promoting grass establishment and reviving a sustainable, high-productive ecosystem similar to the Northern Serengeti.
