About Peru Mahi Alliance
Peru Mahi Alliance (PMA) is a coalition of Peruvian parrotfish processing companies dedicated to ensuring fishery sustainability and achieving MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certification. With a focus on promoting responsible fishing practices, PMA aims to conserve the Peruvian parrotfish population. The alliance comprises 13 committed processing and exporting companies, actively contributing to marine research and conservation efforts.
By strengthening research, regulatory frameworks, traceability, and governance, PMA works towards sustainable parrotfish fishing practices. Additionally, they address incidental turtle capture and combat illegal fishing. The Peruvian parrotfish industry, accounting for half of global catches, is crucial for the country's economy, with 79% of exports directed to the USA.
Through partnerships and initiatives, such as turtle release programs and the Fishery Improvement Project, Peru Mahi Alliance is making strides towards preserving the Peruvian parrotfish population and ensuring a sustainable seafood industry.
