Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) is a flagship initiative launched by the Government of India in May 2016, aimed at providing clean cooking fuel to rural and underprivileged households that traditionally relied on harmful cooking methods. The scheme addresses significant health and environmental concerns associated with the use of firewood, coal, and other traditional fuels. Initially, the target was to deliver 8 crore LPG connections by March 2020, a goal achieved and exceeded with the introduction of Ujjwala 2.0, which expanded the initiative to reach 10.6 crore connections, including provisions for migrant households.

PMUY not only empowers women by improving their cooking conditions but also offers financial assistance covering the costs of cylinders, regulators, and safety installations. Beneficiaries receive their first LPG refill and stove free of charge.
