The Policing Authority is an independent statutory body established on January 1, 2016, with the aim of overseeing the performance of the Garda Síochána in providing policing services in Ireland. As a statutory body, the Authority operates under the Garda Síochána (Policing Authority and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2015, which amended the Garda Síochána Act 2005. The Authority has a wide range of functions, some of which were previously the responsibility of the government or the Minister for Justice and Equality.

The Authority consists of nine members, including the chairperson and eight ordinary members appointed by the government. Underpinning their work is a vision for an ethical, effective, and human rights-based policing service that inspires confidence among the diverse population it serves. The Authority is guided by principles of good corporate governance, transparency, and accountability.

It publishes its minutes and reports regularly and invites public input on its strategies and policies.
