About Pollex
POLLEX-Online is a comparative lexicon and research resource for the study of Polynesian languages, developed as part of the Polynesian Lexicon Project. It traces its origins to work begun by linguist Bruce Biggs at the University of Auckland in the 1960s and is now available as an online database. Researchers and other users can explore reconstructed word forms, language-specific reflexes, sources, semantic fields, and relationships among words across Polynesian and related Austronesian languages.
The database includes material from 67 languages, with more than 77,000 reflexes and 5,700 reconstructions, and continues to be updated with vocabulary and corrections from published and fieldwork sources. Its reconstruction notes also connect Polynesian forms with earlier proto-languages, helping users investigate linguistic history and patterns of descent. POLLEX-Online is intended as a scholarly reference tool rather than a commercial service, and its site provides project background, recent updates, search and browsing features, and guidance for citing the database.
It supports comparative language research by bringing dispersed lexical evidence together in one resource
