The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska is a federally recognized sovereign nation, restored in 1990 after 24 years of federal termination. With more than 6,000 members, the Tribe serves communities across a 15-county area in three states. Its history includes the forced removal of the Ponca people and the landmark 1879 case of Chief Standing Bear, which established Native Americans’ legal personhood in a federal court.
Guided by the values of heritage, sovereignty, and future generations, the Tribe works to sustain Ponca culture, language, traditions, and community life. Its cultural offerings include an annual powwow, language programs, a tribal museum, historic preservation, and a buffalo program.
The Tribe also provides broad services to members and communities, including medical, dental, and behavioral health care; wellness and diabetes programs; emergency, elder, and family assistance; youth initiatives; scholarships and higher education support; and workforce development. Through tribal governance, news, events, and member services, the Ponca Tribe continues to serve its people while building a sustainable sovereign future.
