Portico is a community-supported digital preservation service that works with libraries and publishers to safeguard scholarly and other digital content for long-term access. As part of ITHAKA, a nonprofit focused on improving access to knowledge and education, Portico maintains a trusted archive designed to keep preserved materials usable, authentic, discoverable, and accessible to researchers, scholars, and students.
Its archive includes e-journals, e-books, digital collections, and digital news. Portico collaborates with participating publishers to preserve their content and supports libraries in maintaining access, including when a trigger event makes archived material available. Its services include searchable title and collection information, holdings comparisons, coverage details, preservation guidance, and access alerts. Portico also shares research, presentations, news, and updates about digital preservation, and works with the library and publishing community to advance the protection of scholarly content and the public record.
The service has participation from libraries and publishers worldwide, with more than 1,300 participating libraries and 1,400 publishers represented in its reported figures.
