Potlatch is a small literary speculative fiction convention that brings readers, writers, artists, and editors together as fans to share ideas and enjoy thoughtful conversations about science fiction and speculative fiction. Founded in Seattle, the convention alternates between Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area, and is sometimes held in Portland. Rather than featuring a Guest of Honor, Potlatch includes a Book of Honor, encouraging discussion of a selected work’s strengths and flaws.
The convention also supports the future of speculative fiction through an auction benefiting Clarion West, an intensive six-week workshop for writers beginning their careers. Auction offerings include books, art, and handmade items, with proceeds helping Clarion West support its students. Potlatch’s program may also include a writers’ workshop, alongside community activities and opportunities to connect. Its 25th gathering took place at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library in San José, California, in March 2016, with Leonard Richardson’s Constellation Games selected as the Book of Honor.
