Prieuré de Mesvres

Les Amis du Prieuré de Mesvres is an association dedicated to safeguarding and restoring the historic Priory of Mesvres, in Burgundy’s Morvan region. Its work combines conservation with research and public engagement, helping preserve the site while deepening understanding of its past. The association undertakes archaeological and documentary research into the Priory’s history and organizes events at the building. Its website also shares updates, including information about an exhibition on archaeological study, and introduces visitors to the site’s history and significance.

The Priory is described as the region’s first Christian sanctuary, although its exact founding date is unknown. It is first mentioned in a document from 843, when Charles the Bald confirmed the authority of the Church of Autun over the establishment. At its height, the Priory housed six monks; one of its priors may have been Pierre Roger de Beaufort, the last French sovereign pontiff in Avignon. Through restoration, research, and cultural activities, Les Amis du Prieuré helps keep this important heritage site accessible and appreciated.
