Primary Eyecare Services

Primary Eyecare Services is a not-for-profit provider of NHS-funded eye care, delivered through local optician practices across England. Working in more than 800 neighbourhoods with NHS commissioners, NHS Trusts and Local Optical Committees, it helps make specialist care accessible close to home. Its network includes around 2,400 partner practices, from independent opticians to national chains. The organisation reports more than one million patient assessments in 2025/26 and says 97% of patients recommend its services.

Accredited optometrists provide a range of commissioned services, with local availability depending on NHS arrangements. These include urgent assessment and treatment for sudden eye problems and minor injuries, minor eye condition care, cataract and glaucoma services, retinal diagnostics and monitoring, and specialist medical contact lenses. Other support includes children’s eye care, low vision services, eye examinations for people with learning disabilities or autism, blood pressure checks through hypertension case finding, and eye care navigation to help patients reach the appropriate professional.
