PrimeWater is a Horizon2020 funded research project that aims to generate information on the effects of upstream changes on future water quality and quantity. Through the use of advanced Earth Observation data products, integration with additional data sources, and diagnostic modeling tools, PrimeWater provides better and actionable information for water resources management decisions in the public and private sectors.

The project addresses the challenges faced by our limited freshwater resources, which are increasingly under pressure from climate variability, pollution, population growth, and competition from various uses. One of the main threats to freshwater systems is eutrophication, which can lead to harmful algae blooms (HABs) with negative impacts on humans, animals, and aquatic ecosystems. PrimeWater seeks to develop innovative water resources management solutions to mitigate these threats.

By using advanced remote sensing technologies, PrimeWater enhances the understanding of inland water quality attributes and provides early warning of harmful algal blooms. The project also focuses on co-developing products and services with end-users, fostering collaboration across sectors and establishing a global Community of Practice to improve water resources management with the integration of Earth Observations.
