About Prison Birth
The Alabama Prison Birth Project is a nonprofit initiative working to reduce the harm experienced by pregnant and postpartum women in Alabama’s women’s prison and to strengthen mother-baby connections. The organization recognizes that separation after birth can disrupt bonding and breastfeeding and contribute to physical and mental health challenges for mothers. Its services provide practical, compassionate support before, during, and after birth, helping clients navigate motherhood with dignity and understanding.
The project offers one-to-one birth preparation, in-person labor support, and postpartum peer support through its doula program. It also runs client-centered childbirth education groups designed around the specific challenges of pregnancy and parenting during incarceration. For mothers who want to continue breastfeeding after separation, its lactation program supports breastmilk pumping. The organization’s work is made possible by community and philanthropic partners, including donors and contributors of baby-bag supplies. The Alabama Prison Birth Project invites individuals and organizations to support its programs through donations, sponsorships, meals, supplies, and partnership opportunities, with the goal that no mother or baby experiences birth or separation alone.
