**The Prison Music Project**
Founded by celebrated folk-singer and songwriter Zoe Boekbinder, The Prison Music Project is a transformative initiative aimed at amplifying the voices of incarcerated individuals through music. Beginning with a single visit to New Folsom Prison in 2010, Boekbinder’s engagement evolved into a decade-long collaborative effort that resulted in the album "Long Time Gone," produced by Ani DiFranco and featuring contributions from nine incarcerated and formerly incarcerated writers.
The project not only celebrates the artistry of these individuals but also serves a higher purpose—profits from album sales are redirected to communities affected by mass incarceration, with funds administered by the Southern Center for Human Rights. Each contributing writer retains ownership of their work, receiving royalties as a form of empowerment.
Through performances, workshops, and community engagement, The Prison Music Project strives to challenge the narratives surrounding incarceration while promoting justice, equality, and artistic expression, creating a powerful platform for stories that often go unheard.
