PRO-ALAS Organization for the protection of birds is a remarkable NGO that emerged from a highly successful initiative in 2011 by the Macaw Mountain Bird Park and Nature Reserve in Copán Ruinas, Honduras. This magnificent program, in collaboration with the World Parrot Trust and other local partners, including the Honduran Institute of History and Anthropology, focused on releasing Scarlet Macaws, the revered national bird of Honduras, into the town's renowned archaeological park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With seven years of dedication and six releases, the impact of the macaws on visitors, both local and international, has been astonishing, completely transforming their experience at the site.

Currently, the Copan Valley is now home to over 60 freely flying Scarlet Macaws, and their successful reproduction showcases a sustainable release and reproduction model. Now, PRO-ALAS steps in to broaden this success across Honduras and potentially into neighboring Central American countries. Their mission centers around protecting threatened populations of tropical parrots and avian species in Central America, through two interconnected areas of effort.
