Project Circleg is a brand based in ZΓΌrich that aims to empower people through freedom of mobility while achieving positive social and environmental impact. They celebrate diversity in all shapes and colors. Their holistic approach focuses on three key areas.
Firstly, they offer the circleg prosthesis, a modular, functional, aesthetic, and affordable prosthetic leg for both above- and below-knee amputees. This high-performance prosthesis is lightweight, robust, and significantly improves user comfort. It can be individually adjusted, repaired, and broken components can be easily replaced, reducing time and cost for prosthetists and amputees.
They also provide training services for prosthetists. Secondly, Project Circleg follows the principles of the circular economy in their sustainable local model. Their prosthetic is made of recyclable materials mixed with glass fibers for strength and durability.
Broken parts can be exchanged and transformed into new prosthetics and other products. They manufacture the prosthetic close to the users in regional hubs, with the first hub being in Kenya. Lastly, Project Circleg focuses on broadening access to prosthetic care and reducing the stigma around amputation through projects and campaigns.
They aim to enable amputees to live fulfilled lives as active members of society by increasing accessibility and developing mechanisms for prosthetic care. Project Circleg is committed to addressing the global need for appropriate prosthetic technologies. With an estimated 65 million people living with lower limb amputations globally, they strive to provide quality and affordable prosthetics to those in low- to middle-income countries who currently lack access.
They also aim to tackle the shortage of locally produced prosthetics and combat the stigma and discrimination faced by individuals in need. Not only is Project Circleg concerned with social impact, but they are also dedicated to environmental sustainability. They manufacture locally to shorten the supply chain and decrease their logistics carbon footprint.
The modular design of their prosthetics allows for easy substitution or repair of individual components, eliminating the need to replace the entire prosthetic. They collect used parts to be reinserted into the chain, minimizing waste. Project Circleg started as a student project at the Zurich University of the Arts in 2018, combining social design and the principles of the circular economy.
It has since grown into an ambitious endeavor with the potential for significant social and ecological change. The brand has received recognition and awards for its innovative approach, including the Design Prize Switzerland and the Going Circular Economy No Waste Challenge. By choosing Project Circleg, you are not only getting a high-quality and affordable prosthetic, but you are also contributing to a more inclusive and sustainable world.
