About Audubon Society
The Seabird Institute is an Audubon initiative dedicated to protecting seabirds and the habitats they depend on. Active since 1973, it advances conservation across the hemisphere through scientific research, habitat stewardship, public education, community engagement, and support for Audubonโs coastal and marine conservation policy work. Its programs focus on seabirds including Atlantic Puffins, terns, storm-petrels, and other species.
Based in Maine, the institute operates or supports several visitor and conservation sites, including Hog Island Audubon Camp and Todd Wildlife Sanctuary in Bremen, and the Project Puffin Visitor Center in Rockland. Project Puffin, launched in 1973, is central to its seabird restoration work and helped establish restored breeding colonies in the Gulf of Maine. The institute also shares information about priority seabirds, offers events and learning opportunities, and invites people to participate through community activities and updates. Supporters can contribute through initiatives such as Adopt-A-Puffin, which connects donors with an Atlantic Puffin nesting at Eastern Egg Rock.
