Project SUSTAINABLE is a European Union–funded research and innovation initiative focused on applying artificial intelligence to precision agriculture. Its work tests and validates edge AI systems as decision support tools, helping farmers identify suitable management approaches based on local climate, geography, environmental conditions, crops, infrastructure, and available resources. The project aims to support productive, economically viable farming while improving energy efficiency, reducing water use, and encouraging resource conservation, including water reuse.

SUSTAINABLE develops a cloud-based precision agriculture platform alongside distributed AI capabilities that can run centrally or on devices in the field, reducing the need to transfer large amounts of farm data. Its planned tools include portable, low-cost sensors, solar-powered IoT monitoring systems, AI software, and a mobile app for sensor control and management. The project also researches machine-learning applications, including models for classifying coconuts, and provides training and knowledge-transfer activities. Its research and training pilots cover beer and wine, moringa and olive oil, aquaculture and crop irrigation, and fresh fruit and horticulture.
