About Project Timestamper
Project Timestamper is an initiative focused on preserving the integrity of humanity’s cultural and scientific achievements. It creates verifiable evidence that digital works and collections existed at a particular point in time by permanently recording timestamps on the Bitcoin blockchain. The project presents this approach as a way to help establish provenance and guard against mass counterfeiting enabled by generative AI.
Its timestamped collections span a wide range of material, including Wikipedia database snapshots, fiction and nonfiction books, classic literature, films and television, scientific papers, paintings, music, genome sequences, human genome variants, and archived web pages. The collections draw on sources such as Project Gutenberg, IMDb, Sci-Hub, WikiArt, NCBI, the 1000 Genomes Project, and Common Crawl. The project reports millions of works and, in some collections, billions of web-page captures, with timestamps recorded on different dates.
Project Timestamper is by Yağmur Şahin and Arthur Edelstein. Its website provides information about the project, its rationale, team, frequently asked questions, blog, and comments.
