BALIN is an innovative project focused on promoting insect protection at railway stations through the use of insect-friendly lighting systems. Initiated in January 2021 as part of Germany's Federal Program for Biological Diversity, BALIN aims to assess the impact of light pollution from railway transportation on insect populations. The project explores alternative lighting technologies and concepts to mitigate light pollution, conducting pilot studies and scientific evaluations.
BALIN has made significant strides in understanding the relationship between different lighting systems at railway stations and insect diversity. For the first time, comprehensive data has been collected on how various lighting conditions affect insect populations, addressing existing knowledge gaps in this field. The project's findings, documented in a final report and a publication in Biological Conservation, offer practical recommendations for creating more insect-friendly railway environments. BALIN serves as a pioneering model for enhancing biodiversity through thoughtful infrastructure design and is endorsed by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation.
