ProRaris is the Swiss umbrella organisation for more than 70 patient groups focused on rare diseases, as well as people living with exceptionally rare individual diagnoses. It represents their interests and works to raise public awareness, strengthen patient representation and promote research into rare diseases. The organisation also helps affected people and their families find support, exchange experiences and connect with others.
Its website provides information about rare diseases, including how they are defined, their characteristics, research and medicines, alongside guidance on available help. ProRaris highlights specialised consultations at university and some cantonal hospitals and points people towards counselling for complex individual cases and questions about everyday life, legal matters and psychological wellbeing. The organisation contributes to broader efforts to improve medical care: it is a founding member of the Coordination of Rare Diseases, was a key partner in Switzerland’s National Concept for Rare Diseases, and belongs to the European umbrella organisation Eurordis.
