Since its inception in 1998, PubMLST has evolved to utilize the Bacterial Isolate Genome Sequence database (BIGSdb) software, enabling the inclusion of various levels of sequence data, from single gene sequences to complete genomes. This gene-by-gene analysis of microbial genomes allows for the systematic cataloging of genetic variation, facilitating the prediction of antimicrobial resistance, cross-reactivity with vaccine antigens, and the functional activities of different variants leading to key phenotypes.
