Steve Dunn

Steve Dunn is an author and lifelong baseball fan based in Des Moines, Iowa, whose work explores the history and culture of professional baseball. After four decades in newspaper work, he retired in 2014 and focused on documenting the stories of the game. His featured book, Pug Fireball and Company: 116 Years of Professional Baseball in Des Moines, Iowa, traces the city’s baseball history from its early teams to the Iowa Cubs, recounting the players, managers, owners, teams, and ballparks that shaped the sport locally.

The book also examines Des Moines’ connections to the Negro Leagues and to celebrated figures such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bob Feller, Satchel Paige, and Buck O’Neil. Dunn previously wrote Principal Park: A Diamond in the Rough, about baseball near the meeting of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers, and has contributed biographies and game stories to the Society for American Baseball Research. His latest book is available in print and as an audiobook on Google Play
