The Purple Angel is a global dementia awareness campaign that began in Devon, UK, founded by Norman McNamara, who was diagnosed with dementia at age 50. Created with carer Jane Moore, the Purple Angel symbol represents voluntary efforts to raise understanding and build dementia-friendly communities. The campaign advocates for people living with dementia to enjoy a good quality of life, remain involved in their communities, and receive support without stigma.
Purple Angel shares information for people with dementia, families, businesses, shops and other services. Its website provides guidance on understanding dementia, recognising signs, living with the condition, and seeking support following diagnosis, including a downloadable booklet written by McNamara. Other resources include memory cafes, MP3s, useful links, articles and personal perspectives from the founder. The campaign also encourages practical ways to support people, such as adapting communication and daily interactions. Through ambassadors and supporters in the UK and overseas, Purple Angel promotes awareness, hope and empowerment, and invites people to help create more welcoming communities.
