QuakeNet is an IRC network that has been in existence since 1997, offering a haven for Quakeworld players who wanted their own dedicated network. It quickly attracted players from various games and grew into one of the largest IRC networks globally. QuakeNet's rise in popularity coincided with the peak of IRC's popularity in the early 2000s, and it claimed the title of the largest IRC network, with nearly a quarter of a million concurrent users at its peak in 2005.
Despite a decline in IRC's popularity, QuakeNet remains a strong and popular communications platform for a wide range of social and work groups. No other service has successfully surpassed IRC in terms of the features it offers for multi-user text-based communication. QuakeNet is not controlled by any individual or company; it is governed by a group of administrators who ensure a balanced and fair oversight of the network.
The QuakeNet website is built using various advanced technologies, including Newserv (QuakeNet's modular network service), nterfacer (an interactive external interface), Python & Django, Apache & nginx, Memcached & python-memcache, Lucene, solr & solrpy, Postgres & psycopg2, and OpenSSL & pyOpenSSL. QuakeNet is a non-profit international group, and their branding and website were generously designed and built by Kovalent Systems
