Raider Aerospace Society (RAS) is Texas Tech University’s student-led aerospace and aeronautics organization, founded in 2016 by students from the Edward E. Whitacre, Jr. College of Engineering. It gives students hands-on experience through projects that build technical, interdisciplinary, and project management skills, helping prepare them for careers in the aerospace industry. RAS has grown from small sugar-rocket builds to launching a 14-foot Class III vehicle, while expanding its presence in collegiate aerospace programs.
The organization’s Space Raiders division focuses on rocketry, with students designing, manufacturing, testing, and launching a competition rocket for the International Rocket Engineering Competition at Spaceport America. Pegasus develops aeronautical engineering knowledge through collegiate competitions, while Pigeon Works supports student-led research and development projects by providing teams and resources to pursue their ideas. RAS also collaborates with sponsors that provide engineering software, simulation tools, financial support, and practical services for its projects. Through these programs and partnerships, the society aims to advance student aerospace work and strengthen its competitive presence.
