RAIZ is a research and knowledge-transfer institute focused on sustainable development and a forest-based bioeconomy, particularly one built around eucalyptus. It brings together researchers and fellows to advance innovation across the forest and paper industries, while providing specialist services and consultancy to develop practical, sustainable solutions.

Its activities span forest research and consultancy, technological research and consultancy, innovation management and operational support, and training. RAIZ also participates in national and international collaborative projects, working through research networks and consortia to support innovation and sustainability throughout the forest-based industrial value chain. Its work has contributed to international patent applications, reflecting its role in research and innovation in Portugal.

RAIZ also welcomes visitors to Quinta de São Francisco, near Aveiro. The site features a centuries-old eucalyptus arboretum, notable trees, diverse plant life and more than 51 bird species. Through the Floresta do Saber, visitors can explore exhibitions and educational activities that introduce Portugal’s forest species and biodiversity.
