The Rákosi Viper Conservation Program is a Hungarian nature-conservation initiative dedicated to protecting the Rákosi viper, a rare snake found only in the Carpathian Basin and among Hungary’s most endangered vertebrates. Its work has been underway since 2004 and is supported by the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture and the European Union’s LIFE-Nature fund. The program combines captive breeding, habitat restoration and management, population monitoring, research, and the release of vipers into suitable habitats.
It also provides education and public outreach to raise awareness of the species’ ecological importance and the value of biodiversity. Through its website, the program shares species information, photographs, news, educational downloads, and updates on conservation results. It also offers opportunities to learn about the vipers through exhibitions, public events, presentations, and visits to conservation and education facilities, including the Rákosi Viper Conservation and Education Centre.
The initiative’s conservation work has twice received European recognition as a leading nature-conservation program, earning the “Best of the Best” award in 2009 and 2015
