The Convention on Wetlands is dedicated to the conservation and wise use of all wetlands, both locally and globally. Wetlands are incredibly diverse and productive ecosystems that play a crucial role in providing essential services and supplying fresh water. Unfortunately, wetlands continue to face degradation and conversion for other purposes.

The Convention takes a comprehensive approach by defining wetlands to include various areas such as lakes, rivers, swamps, marshes, wet grasslands, peatlands, estuaries, and coastal areas, among others. It also encompasses man-made sites like fish ponds, rice paddies, and reservoirs. Under the three pillars of the Convention, Contracting Parties commit to promoting the wise use of wetlands, designating suitable sites for the list of Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar List), and ensuring effective management.

Additionally, international cooperation is encouraged for transboundary wetlands, shared wetland systems, and shared species. The Convention offers resources and activities such as grant programs, capacity building tools, and Ramsar Advisory Missions to support wetland conservation efforts. With a focus on sustainable development, the Convention aligns with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

By joining forces with various partners, including other conventions and the private sector, the Convention on Wetlands strives to achieve its mission of conserving and wisely utilizing wetlands for the benefit of humanity and the environment
