Rapidan Equine Sanctuary (RES) is a registered 501(c)(3) organization serving the Fredericksburg, Virginia, area and Culpeper County. Founded in 2024 by a group of local advocates, RES began operations in March 2025 with a mission to provide sanctuary to neglected equines while embracing the bond they share with people. Since opening, the sanctuary has provided safe, permanent care for 15 equines who otherwise faced neglect or abandonment. Its residents include horses, donkeys, mules, and ponies, whose physical, emotional, and social needs guide the organization’s approach to care.
RES is committed to compassionate care, responsible stewardship, and meaningful connections among equines, people, communities, and the land. Guided by integrity, courage, compassion, education, and fun, it also seeks to help human partners grow in confidence and ability. The organization invites the community to get involved through volunteering, sponsoring an equine, and supporting its work. RES also features Maya’s Mares, Maria’s Community Shed, and an online store, and hosts fundraising events such as its cocktail reception and silent auction.
