About Rare Diseases South Africa
Rare Diseases South Africa (RDSA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals affected by rare diseases and congenital disorders. Founded in 2013 by Kelly du Plessis, whose personal experience with her son's diagnosis highlighted the lack of awareness and support for rare diseases in South Africa, RDSA has since launched several successful initiatives to advocate for greater recognition and support. Their mission is to ensure that patients have access to life-saving treatments, supportive care, and improved health services for a better quality of life.
RDSA actively engages with governmental departments, industry players, and strategic stakeholders to raise awareness and advance rare disease policies. In 2020, RDSA expanded its mandate to include congenital disorders and absorbed Genetic Alliance South Africa into its operations. With a dedicated team and board of directors representing various sectors, RDSA is committed to creating a better tomorrow for individuals with rare diseases and congenital disorders in South Africa
