Its intelligent energy loss sensor monitors indoor temperature and sounds an alert when it changes rapidly by more than two degrees within user-adjustable time settings. It is designed to distinguish potential energy loss, such as an external door left open, from gradual temperature shifts and ordinary drafts. By prompting people to close doors or take other corrective action, cli:mate aims to reduce wasted energy, utility costs and associated carbon emissions in both cold and hot climates.

The compact prototype can be positioned near an external door and is suitable for homes, small offices and factories, server rooms, and wine storage. It uses two AAA batteries, and alerts can also be sent to compatible smartphones or other Wi-Fi devices; measurements may be logged and graphed to track improvements. Developed to a fully working prototype, cli:mate is offered as a licensing opportunity for established smart-home companies interested in manufacturing the device or integrating its concept into existing products.
