Riding for Disabled Capricorn is a Western Australian centre affiliated with Riding for the Disabled Association Australia, an internationally recognised organisation. Founded in 1972, it was the first centre for disability riding established in Western Australia and has a long history of supporting riders, from newcomers to those who have been involved since its earlier days in Floreat. Its committee, coaches and volunteers provide horse-riding programs for people with a wide range of disabilities and support needs.
Riding is presented as a distinctive form of exercise and rehabilitation that can help improve balance, posture, coordination, strength, mobility and range of motion. The programs may also support confidence, emotional control, social participation and a sense of achievement. Riders include people with conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, epilepsy, hearing or vision impairment, and muscular dystrophy.
People can get involved by registering to ride, volunteering, donating, fundraising or sponsoring a horse. Based in Pinjar, the centre welcomes enquiries from those seeking more information about its services and ways to participate.
