About Reading the Rolls
Reading the Rolls is a free scholarly search and analysis resource for exploring calendared records of medieval England from 1199 to 1509. Its corpus contains 584,660 entries drawn from eight printed record series, including the Patent, Close and Fine Rolls. Users can search by name, place, act type or concept, browse people, families, relationships, titles, places and reigns, and explore records through tools such as advanced search and a map. The site helps researchers follow individuals, families and locations across the corpus and discover entries from the reigns of English monarchs spanning John to Henry VII.
The records were machine-read from public-domain scans of printed calendars. Most entries are editors’ English summaries rather than transcriptions of the original manuscripts; some volumes reproduce the Latin text of the rolls. The extracted people, families and relationships are unverified, so results should be checked against the printed sources. Reading the Rolls also provides guidance on its coverage and methods, citation information, and a way to report problems.
