The ReCARES Network is a local community benefit and environmental 501(c)3 non-profit organization in the Bay Area. Since 1996, they have been collecting, redistributing, and encouraging the reuse of medical equipment and supplies throughout the region. Founded by Liisa Nenonen, an operating room nurse, the organization started with the goal of finding environmentally sound solutions for the wise reuse of healthcare resources.

ReCARES collects used durable medical equipment, assistive devices, and surplus home care supplies donated by families, hospitals, and assisted living facilities. These items are then distributed to people in need, including individuals with disabilities, caregivers, and senior adults. ReCARES serves a diverse population, including African-American, Asian-American, Latinx, and immigrant communities.

With distribution sites in Oakland, San Francisco, and Marin County, ReCARES serves over 3,000 people annually and distributes more than 6,000 items ranging from wheelchairs to adult incontinence supplies. Their mission is to decrease environmental waste and increase access to medical equipment and supplies in the community. They value respect for the environment and individuals, inspire others to donate and receive without social markers, and offer compassionate assistance to everyone who comes to ReCARES.

Through their efforts, they provide safety, dignity, and support to vulnerable elders and individuals with disabilities, as well as ease the stress of families facing health challenges
